WHAT IS TIG WELDING?

It is a manual welding machine that requires welders both hand to operate. This might seem a bit irritating but that’s worth it since it offers great quality weld. However, this doesn’t work like other welders, it is a bit different.

The way the arc is created and the filler metal gets attached, this is what makes it different from other welding machines. TIG welders create an arc between the non-consumable tungsten electrode and the base metal.

When the arc hits the base metal, a molten weld pool forms from that. And then a thin filler metal wire is handfed to the pool where it melts and gets attached. In the meantime, inert shielding gas flows in order to protect the weld pool and the electrode from oxygen contamination.

And as mentioned earlier, TIG welding requires both hands. One hand is for holding the TIG torch that is what produces the arc. And another hand is used to add the filler metal that is what makes the weld joint.

TIG welding is a little difficult since both hands are used but it is one of the most versatile welders and you will feel that when you will deal with different metals. TIG welding process is slower but if done right, the welder will be proud of using TIG welder, it generates outstanding weld joints.

Why Use TIG Welding?

There is various reason why you should use TIG welding. It provides stronger weld joints compared to other welding. Plus, the TIG weld joints are ductile and completely corrosion resistant. Unlike few, TIG welding doesn’t need flux.

TIG welders will allow you to work on various metals and it also allows you to have more control over the welding process. It suited to both AC DC current.

WHAT IS TIG WELDING USED FOR?

TIG welding can work on various metals, it can be used in repairing a large pool of items. But in order to get satisfying weld joints, you have to know the right way to weld, otherwise, you will end up wasting everything.

However, TIG welding is mostly used in airfields, automotive, aerospace, and repair industries. Have a look at detail discussion below.

Aerospace

Because of the strongest weld aircraft and spacecraft manufacturer used TIG welding in the construction. This says a lot about the reliability of TIG welding.

Not only that, commercial planes that we see every day also have TIG welds. TIG welding is well-known for its satisfying weld joints.

Automotive

Do you what is the main priority of auto industries? Safe and secure construction, because anything wrong in the construction can cause them to lose their entire image. And for secure construction, they have chosen TIG welding.

One of the major reasons behind using TIG welding is vehicle construction is, TIG offers corrosion resistant welds and they used it in welding car fender in order to keep the rust away.

Repair

TIG welding is widely used in most metal repairing applications. With it, you can complete most kind of repairing works such as repairing a child’s toy to fixing old aluminum tools.

But TIG welding is a little hard and when there is a bunch of easy options why still people use TIG welds for repairs?

Simple, for strong and good looking weld joints that any other welding machine will barely offer.

Art

Appearance is what matters the most in artworks. Along with the sturdiness, TIG welding offers beautiful weld joints too and that is why they are also used in artworks. Things like metal sculptures and industrial fixtures, they completely depend on TIG welding.

WHAT GAS IS USED FOR TIG WELDING?

Argon is the most popular gas material for TIG welding and the reason is, it can work on most type of metals including aluminum, not all gas can do it. For good weld, you will have to use pure argon.

Plus, argon offers amazing arc stability and also requires close to no cleaning at all. Since the arc is concentrated and narrow you will get accurate weld with no bead rollover. On top of everything, you will get bright shiny weld.
